Product Description
This video covers the 1960s training and duties of Navy divers who search for and disarm explosives. Scenes were filmed at: Navy Swimmers' School in Florida and Navy explosive ordnance school in Maryland. "Bomb Squad U.S.N." Volunteer personnel are trained at the Navy Swimmers' School, Key West, Florida, where they learn to operate as an underwater team. Graduating as SCUBA divers from all the armed services, the men then go to the Navy explosive ordnance school at Indian Head, Maryland. Here they study the explosive weapons of various countries, nuclear weapons disarmament, etc. Classroom study is followed by at sea instruction at Key West. After six months and 2,000 hours of training, they graduate. Navy personnel are assigned to bomb squads of one officer and three enlisted men aboard ammunition ships, aircraft carriers, etc. World-wide, they search for explosives attached to the hulls of ships in port, and assist fire fighters at all naval air stations. The film ends with the search for an "actual" mine by using hand-held sonar which discloses a moored horned contact mine which is cut free and floats to the surface after an inflatable bag is attached to the mine. This film was produced by the U.S. Navy Chief of Information.
